5 Tips to Prepare Your Vacation Home for a Photo Shoot

Last week, we discussed how to update one of your most powerful marketing tools: your vacation home’s online photo gallery.  If you decided that it’s time for new pictures after reading the article, read our tips on preparing your vacation home for a photo shoot.

1.    De-clutter.  Schedule a time to go through your home and remove sources of clutter.  Collections, knickknacks, or trash detract from pictures.  Surfaces like kitchen counters should be kept bare.  Remember, you’re advertising space, not stuff.

2.    Use lots of lighting.  On the day of your photo shoot, open your window curtains and blinds.  Natural light makes a room appear spacious.  Turn on all of your lamps for extra light and to give definition to your furniture.  Don’t overlook the visual impact of a night picture – lights viewed from the outside provide an especially warm glow.

3.    Create a welcoming look.  Set your kitchen or dining room table with clean dishes, a fruit basket, or stemware and a bottle of wine.  Arrange a vase of fresh, colorful flowers on a table or counter.  If your home has a pool, run the jets or place folded beach towels on a lounge chair.

4.    Highlight special features.  Include photographs of anything unique about your home – murals, upgraded tiling and light fixtures, or luxury amenities.  Allow these features to help your vacation home stand apart from others.

5.    Keep it simple.  When in doubt opt for the simpler solution.  A simple approach will ensure you don’t overwhelm your guest with needless visual details.  Let your beautiful home speak for itself!

Whether you’re having your photos snapped by a photographer or taking them yourself (don’t forget about using a professional-grade digital camera), these preparation tips will give your pictures a special edge.
